Man arrested for sending threatening letter, drugs to Malta’s EU commissioner

A man has been arrested on suspicion of sending a threatening note and a bag containing drugs to the home of Malta’s European commissioner, Helena Dalli.
According to the Times of Malta, a 30-year-old man, who has not been named, was detained in connection with the incident.
Screenshots of the letter in local media show the phrase (in all caps): “Next time I will be prepaird [sic] to get something for the kids” with hearts and kisses drawn underneath. A jar containing cannabis was also left at Dalli’s home.
Maltese-language newspaper II-Mument at the weekend published photos taken from security footage showing a man parking by Dalli’s residence and leaving something outside. In a Facebook post, Dalli confirmed that the incident took place on July 31 and had been reported to police.
Dalli’s son Luke said in his own Facebook post that the threatening note was accompanied by a bag of drugs.
Dalli’s five-year term as European commissioner for equality is about to come to an end. Last week, she publicly denied a report accusing her of trying to stay on during Ursula von der Leyen’s second term by undermining Valletta’s candidate, Glenn Micallef.
